Group LOTO: The Master Lockbox Method
Managing complex isolation points across multiple trades safely using centralized lockboxes.
When a turnaround or major installation involves dozens of workers across multiple disciplines (electricians, mechanics, piping, etc.), individual Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) at the equipment source becomes impossible to manage safely.
This is where the Group Lockbox method saves lives.
How the Master Lockbox Works
- Primary Isolation: A Primary Authorized Employee isolates and locks out all designated energy sources (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic) using a set of “equipment locks.”
- Centralizing the Keys: The keys to all of those equipment locks are placed inside a Master Lockbox.
- Personal Protection: Every worker, regardless of trade, attaches their own personal LOTO lock to the outside of the Master Lockbox before they begin work.
Why This is Critical
The keys to the hazardous energy cannot be removed from the box until every single personal lock on the outside of the box is removed. This guarantees that the system cannot be re-energized while even one person is still working on the process line or electrical bus.
Never hand your lock or key to someone else, and never assume someone else has “covered” your isolation. If your lock isn’t on the box, your life isn’t protected.
